"Accessible Homes shouldn't forget they are Homes, first."

Accessible homes must be designed to accommodate their owner's unique needs. And when you think about it that way, they are really no different from other custom homes.
Why then do homes designed for accessibility often look boring, unimaginative, or even "institutional"?
There is really only one reason - their designers lacked the vision, knowledge, and/or motivation to make them both accessible and beautiful.

I'm not saying that accessibility should be compromised to make them more attractive. I believe it is a requirement that a home be fully usable by it's owners. Twenty-two years of designing Medical Centers, Rehabilitation Facilities, and Retirement Communities has taught me a great deal about designing for limited mobility, and has made accessibility a core design issue of every project I undertake. In fact, my clients report that their new homes are easier to live in than they ever imagined a home could be.
